Common Questions

Quick answers to the things everyone asks.

Is this "real" insurance?

Yes! These are fully underwritten private insurance plans from major carriers. They are not "short-term" or "discount plans." They offer comprehensive coverage, but because they are health-based, they are often much more affordable for healthy individuals.

Can I keep my doctor?

Most likely, yes. The plans I recommend primarily use nationwide PPO networks (like Cigna or UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus), which are among the largest in the country. You can search for your specific doctor before you sign up.

What if I have a pre-existing condition?

It depends on the condition. Minor things (like controlled high blood pressure or anxiety) are often fine. Major conditions might mean an ACA plan is a better fit. I will always be honest with you—if I can't help you, I'll tell you exactly where to go to get the coverage you need.

Meet Matty

Your Personal Health Insurance Advisor

Hi, I'm Matty. I started MattyCares with a simple mission: to help healthy families stop overpaying for health insurance.

After years in the industry, I realized that the "one-size-fits-all" approach of the ACA marketplace was failing healthy people. You were paying high premiums to subsidize others, often with high deductibles that made the insurance useless for everyday needs.

I specialize in private, health-based plans that reward your good health with lower rates (up to 50% less) and better benefits. I'm not just a broker; I'm your advocate.

Key Guides

Understanding Health-Based Plans

Learn how private health-based plans work and why they might be right for you.

How Underwriting Works

When you apply for a health-based plan, the insurance company reviews your medical history, current health conditions, medications, lifestyle factors, and family health history. This helps them assess your risk and determine if you qualify and at what rate.

What Health Factors Are Considered

  • Chronic conditions (diabetes, hypertension, etc.)
  • Mental health history
  • Medications and treatments
  • Recent hospitalizations or surgeries
  • Lifestyle habits

Most healthy individuals are approved. Pre-existing conditions don't automatically disqualify you—it depends on the specific condition and severity.

Why Rates Are Lower for Healthy Individuals

Since you're less likely to need expensive medical care, the insurance company can charge lower premiums. This is a win-win: you save money, and they have lower risk.

Coverage Benefits and Networks

  • $0 deductible options
  • Nationwide PPO networks
  • No referrals required
  • Out-of-network coverage available
  • Comprehensive preventive care coverage

Deductibles vs. Premiums

Understand the difference and how to find the right balance for your budget.

What is a Deductible?

Your deductible is the amount you must pay out-of-pocket before your insurance starts covering costs. For example, with a $1,000 deductible, you pay the first $1,000 of medical costs, then insurance covers costs above $1,000.

How Premiums Are Calculated

Your premium is the monthly amount you pay for coverage, regardless of whether you use it. Premiums are based on your age, health status, plan type, deductible amount, and geographic location.

Zero Deductible Options

Many health-based plans offer $0 deductible options, meaning you don't pay anything before insurance kicks in. You may have copays for specific services, but you still have an out-of-pocket maximum. Great for people who want predictable costs.

Out-of-Pocket Maximums

Your out-of-pocket maximum is the most you'll pay in a year. After reaching this limit, insurance covers 100% of covered services. Typical maximums are $3,000-$7,000 depending on the plan.

PPO vs. HMO vs. EPO

Compare network types and find the best fit for your healthcare needs.

PPO (Preferred Provider Organization)

  • Flexibility: Highest
  • Cost: Higher premiums, lower out-of-pocket
  • Referrals: Not required
  • Out-of-Network: Covered (at higher cost)

PPOs give you the most flexibility. You can see any doctor or hospital without referrals. Out-of-network care is covered, though you'll pay more. Best for people who want maximum choice.

HMO (Health Maintenance Organization)

  • Flexibility: Lowest
  • Cost: Lower premiums, higher out-of-pocket
  • Referrals: Required
  • Out-of-Network: Generally not covered

HMOs require you to choose a primary care doctor and get referrals for specialists. You must use in-network providers. Best for people who want lower premiums and don't mind restrictions.

EPO (Exclusive Provider Organization)

  • Flexibility: Middle ground
  • Cost: Mid-range premiums
  • Referrals: Not required
  • Out-of-Network: Generally not covered

EPOs are a middle ground between PPO and HMO. You don't need referrals but must use in-network providers. Good balance of cost and flexibility.

How to Lower Your Premiums

Practical strategies to reduce your monthly health insurance costs.

Choosing the Right Plan Type

Different plan types have different costs. Health-based plans are often 30-50% cheaper than ACA for healthy individuals. Higher deductible plans have lower premiums in exchange for higher out-of-pocket costs. HMOs typically have lower premiums but less flexibility.

Higher Deductible Options

Choosing a higher deductible can significantly lower your premium:

  • $500 deductible vs. $0: Save 15-20% on premiums
  • $1,000 deductible vs. $0: Save 25-35% on premiums
  • $2,500 deductible vs. $0: Save 40-50% on premiums

Health Savings Accounts (HSAs)

HSAs are tax-advantaged accounts that let you save pre-tax money for medical expenses. Contributions are tax-deductible, growth is tax-free, and withdrawals for medical expenses are tax-free. Unused funds roll over year to year.

Quick Reference

ACA vs. Health-Based Plans

Subsidies Available if eligible Not available
Deductibles Often $5,000+ $0 options available

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about health insurance and MattyCares

Who qualifies for health-based plans?

These plans are designed for generally healthy individuals and families. Approval is based on a short medical questionnaire — similar to life insurance underwriting but much simpler. Many common and controlled conditions are still accepted.

Is this better than ACA / Marketplace coverage?

For healthy people — usually yes. ACA plans must price everyone the same regardless of health, which drives premiums up. Health-based plans reward low-risk individuals with significantly lower monthly costs and richer PPO-style benefits.

Are these real major medical plans?

Yes. These are fully insured plans backed by large national carriers and use major PPO networks like Cigna and UnitedHealthcare. This is not a discount plan, sharing plan, or short-term coverage.

Can self-employed business owners write this off?

Yes. Most self-employed individuals can deduct 100% of their premiums, and many business owners can structure payments through their entity for major tax savings. This often lowers your *true* cost even more than the monthly premium suggests.

I have insurance through work — can my family still use this?

Absolutely — and this is one of the biggest money-saving strategies. Many clients keep their employer coverage for themselves and move their spouse and children onto a health-based family plan for dramatically lower premiums and better networks.

Can I keep my doctor?

Most likely yes. These plans use nationwide PPO networks, meaning you aren’t restricted to small local HMOs. Matty can also verify your doctors before enrollment.

When can I enroll?

Unlike ACA plans, these are available year-round with no Open Enrollment restrictions. Approval is based on health, not the calendar.

What if I’m declined?

If a health-based plan isn’t the right fit, Matty will guide you to ACA marketplace coverage or other guaranteed options. There is never pressure and no downside to applying.

Why are these plans so much cheaper?

ACA requires carriers to accept everyone at the same price, which drives premiums up. Health-based plans use underwriting to reward healthier individuals, allowing carriers to lower costs significantly.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. These are month-to-month plans with no contracts or penalties. If your situation changes, you can switch or cancel freely.
